Conservation Commission Meeting
April 25, 2012
Present: Members - Carol Irvin, Neal Brown, Karen Day
Guests – None
Meeting called to order at 7:30pm.
We debriefed on the Roadside Roundup that took place on April 21. All thought it was successful event and we had good participation. We had more volunteers cleaning up on Saturday than the previous year and turn out at the dinner was better than expected. We estimate that nearly 80 people attended the dinner and another 20 attended the presentation by Lisa Murphy from Southwest Planning. The ice cream sundaes served by members of the Planning Board were a big hit.
While the dinner went smoothly, we will need to do more planning around cleanup if we ever have another program after the dinner. The Woman’s Club needed to cleanup before the presentation finished so we’ll have to work on that issue next time.
Carol is handling the thank you cards to the Woman’s Club and Haywood’s (the business that donated the ice cream and all the toppings). She’ll also continue to check the dumpster until it is hauled away.
We also discussed the costs and benefits of mailing the bags to every household and what we might do if in the future the GiVERS aren’t able to help stuff the envelopes.
Next, we reviewed the draft Short Range Conservation Action Plan that Lisa Murphy drafted for us. Neal and Karen provided some input. Carol will edit the plan and then finalize it with Lisa Murphy. We discussed the utility of putting this plan in the next issue of the Spirit. Given its length, three pages, Carol will work with Janet Renaud to highlight only the vision statement and goals for publication in the Spirit.
One short-range goal is to increase the membership of the Commission. The group discussed various options for increasing the number on the Commission.
The meeting concluded with a review of the mail.
